Angie Gonzalez : Permaculture As A Healthy Lifestyle

Perma-culture. The actual word stands for permanent - culture. It is the example of an extraordinary lifestyle that designs and implements human living establishments that mimic the patterns of nature to recreate super healthy environments. Creating such settlements, we allow for a replenishing, ever-renewing permanent culture versus a degenerating, polluting culture that exploits and diminishes quality of life.

Permaculture settlements are built with the next 3 ethics in mind :
• Care for the Earth:
o composting
o permaculture gardens
o plant propagating (medicinal and edible)
o rain harvesting
o proper grey and black water filtering though biologic processes
o air cleanliness by having abundant vegetation and less carbon dioxides
o utilizing passive and active solar energy

• Care for the People:
o building community
o trading
o cooperating
o natural plant medicine
o healthy eating
o community time banks
o lending a hand to neighbors and friends with sustainable projects of their own

• Fair Shares / Share the Surplus:
o the excess yields from permaculture gardens can now be shared
o in a green economy nature becomes the resource of wealth
o the more we work with the Earth, the more abundance we will have to share with our loved ones and those who surround us - there is no real reason for hunger or nutritional lacking. For now, let’s consider a permaculture environment’s effect on our health.

Health is primarily the result of genetics and lifestyle. We have the choice to activate sick genes or develop a super-resistant immune system. We are turning on or off the switches to disease with our everyday choices -- from the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the thoughts we feed to our mind. All of these factors affect our health.

Polluted air will cause polluted lungs and bloodstream, as heavy metals in the air from industrial processes enter through our breath. Genetically modified foodstuff, such as most corn, wheat and soy that we are in contact with everyday will modify our DNA. Chemicals such as polyethylene come from plastic and can leech into food from Tupperware and water bottles. These contaminate our body as well as the environment . Our physical body and the body of the Earth have an incredibly similar resonance; our electro magnetic field resonates at the rhythm of the Earth’s. That is the reason why when we go out to explore nature, whether to the beach, desert or forest we experience a sense of bliss and exaltment. We fall into a state of ease, and it allows us to settle into a natural mental frequency in which we can reflect and slow down from the usual time-bound state of mind.

We can see why ancient seers, monks or saints often retired into nature to meditate, pray or simply recharge in order to place the mind in focus and the heart into soothing balance. Nature is an oasis to restore health.

Today nature has been diminished or put to the side, being replaced with more technology, faster cars, computers and robots. We race to accumulate material possessions in order to fill the empty space that separation from nature creates. We currently experience disconnection from natural cycles, such as the lack of witnessing the process of a seed becoming our food.

The linear fast-paced world is very different from nature’s cyclical mode. Our nervous system has a hard time processing the artificial modus vivendi and experiences stress and hostility. Our automated lives cause pollution in the environment creating wastes that do not disintegrate naturally back into nature and pollution in our body.

Many of us have become aware of the causes of illness related to food, therefore adopt a healthier diet cutting saturated or hydrogenated fats, sugars, and genetically modified organisms. As an antidote we begin to choose organic, plant-based diets.

I believe this is necessary and a great first step toward a healthier immune system. Though there’s more we can do towards vibrant health, inner and outer. It’s not only about going to the health food store and picking up our favorite healthy brands and supplements. The packaging of organic foods still creates pollution, if not recycled properly. The means for transporting these products produce heavy amounts of CO2s contaminating the air we breathe and contributing to global warming.

Let’s get to the root of healing. By healing our environment we can heal ourselves. Everyone can do their part in their backyard, rooftop or balcony. We can all demand and create better recycling systems to diminish waste and create more local food production by helping a friend plant a garden as we plant our own as well. We can all choose to bike and walk more, diminishing our need to drive. Remember, these individual changes you decide are also contagious. In the future you may influence your friends and neighbors. We will make a greater impact as the example of our low-impact, healthy lifestyles ripple out into our culture.

Remember have patience and start small. These are some tips you can start with :
1. Begin to grow sprouts and herbs in your balcony, terrace, or windowsill.
2. Start a compost to process organic waste back into healthy, fertile soil.
3. If you have a house, place out barrels or drums to catch the rainwater of your gutters for watering your lawn, garden etc.
4. Practice the three R´s : Reduce the amount of waste you produce by buying less packaged goods and choose products with biodegradable packaging or none at all. Reuse items that may otherwise be thrown out. Make something creative and productive -- get crafty. Recycle If not available in your area of residence find out how you can make it happen by demanding this service.
5. Go vintage : the more you buy used the more you help reduce factory production of things that may very well already be there. Have swap parties with your friends and exchange clothes and accessories that will thrill you. Find a really a sassy, cute and funky vintage store where you can go when you get the ‘lets go shopping’ bug.
6. Make sure you always have cloth bags with you for making trips to the grocery to reduce the need for plastic bags.
7. Have a water filter and refillable glass water bottles to eliminate your need for plastic bottled water.
8. Get yourself a bike and cycle to do simple errands in the neighborhood such as a grocery shopping, post office, drycleaners, haircut etc. Make sure you build in a nicely sized basket to carry things in your bike.
9. Plant a permaculture garden. If you have a backyard it can turn into an edible green haven. By planting your own food you reduce your dependence on shipping veggies from far off places, which creates pollution and greenhouse gases contributing to climate change.
10. Have planting parties where friends can come and help get garden projects done and have a healthy food fest after.
11. Consume herb teas, fresh juice, and healthy veggies from your garden harvest.
12. Spend time in nature. Go out and explore by biking, running or swimming. Gardening, mulching and lifting is also a great workout and you get to connect with the outdoors.
13. Breathe more fresh air and remember to stretch as you breathe. Give yourself moments of daily silence.
14. Remember to practice gratitude, patience and present moment awareness.
